European officials have called on companies developing generative AI tools to create a voluntary code of conduct that would make their products more transparent to the public.

In a statement on June 5, Vera Jourova, the European Commission’s vice president for values and transparency, said that companies that use generative AI to create content should label it as such and put in place safeguards to prevent it from being used to spread disinformation.

“Generative AI has the potential to be a powerful tool for good, but it also has the potential to be used for harmful purposes,” Jourova said. “That’s why it’s important for companies to be transparent about how they’re using this technology and to take steps to prevent it from being used to spread disinformation.”

Jourova’s statement comes as the EU is preparing to adopt new regulations governing the use of AI. The proposed regulations would require companies to ensure that their AI systems are fair, transparent, and accountable.

The EU’s call for a voluntary code of conduct is a positive step that could help to ensure that generative AI is used responsibly.

By working together, companies can develop best practices for using this technology and help to protect the public from its harmful potential.
