Binance founder CZ Zhao faces up to 3 years in prison as the company’s growth soars

The sentencing of Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, known as CZ, was scheduled for Tuesday, April 30th.

In November of last year, he confessed to breaching U.S. anti-money laundering laws. The duration of his sentence is likely to be three years.

Prosecutors are seeking a severe sentence due to Zhao’s inadequate adherence to regulations. Zhao is well-known for advocating the idea of “seeking forgiveness rather than permission.”

Zhao has the potential to become the richest incarcerated individual in the United States, as he possesses a fortune of $43 billion. The exchange has flourished despite the legal troubles faced by its founder.

In 2023, the number of users increased by 40 million, representing a 30% growth. According to Bloomberg, Binance’s customer assets have surpassed $100 billion, and its revenues for March amounted to $9.8 billion.

Zhao agreed to a penalty of $50 million, but Binance resolved claims of anti-money laundering and sanctions violations by paying $4.3 billion.
