Binance has issued a worldwide alert over an escalating threat to cryptocurrency users, especially those using Android devices, posed by “Clipper malware.” This malware captures wallet addresses during transactions and diverts cash to accounts managed by hackers.

Since August 27, 2024, the exchange has experienced a notable rise in instances related to Clipper malware, primarily affecting Android users. iOS users are vulnerable, as Clipper malware can disseminate via unapproved applications and plugins, frequently obtained from untrusted sources, particularly in non-English languages.

In response to this vulnerability, Binance has prohibited suspicious wallet addresses and notified impacted customers. The platform is diligently monitoring for supplementary dangers to avert additional attacks.

Users are urged to verify wallet addresses prior to transactions and save screenshots of withdrawal addresses to confirm that funds are directed to the appropriate destination.

Binance underscores the necessity of employing trustworthy security software and validating the legitimacy of applications or plugins, particularly those obtained from unapproved sources.

Clipper virus constitutes a form of address poisoning attack in which perpetrators substitute authentic wallet addresses with deceptive counterparts that closely resemble them.

This strategy has resulted in considerable financial losses, exemplified by an investor forfeiting $70 million in Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) owing to such an assault.

The rising prevalence of Clipper malware is indicative of a larger increase in malware aimed at bitcoin users, with McAfee reporting 280 counterfeit applications since the year’s onset.
