In a shocking turn of events, the Gutter Cat Gang NFT project has fallen victim to a SIM swap attack, resulting in the theft of more than $765,000 worth of nonfungible tokens (NFTs).
The security breach was discovered by vigilant members of the NFT community, who noticed suspicious activity on the project’s Twitter accounts.
Co-founder @GutterMitch took to Twitter to issue a warning, stating that their accounts had been compromised and urging users not to interact with any links.
The hacker(s) behind the attack used the compromised accounts to share fraudulent links to fake “limited edition” Gutter Cat Gang NFT sneaker airdrops. Unsuspecting users who clicked on these links had their hot wallets drained of funds.
To lend an air of legitimacy to their scheme, the tweets included authentic Gutter Cat Gang branding and imagery from the project’s recent sneaker drop in collaboration with Puma and NBA player LaMelo Ball.
Blockchain investigator ZachXBT, in response to the incident, suggested that the Gutter Cat Gang team had fallen victim to a SIM swap attack and questioned their cybersecurity practices.
He further emphasized the need for compensation for the victims, highlighting two individuals who lost significant amounts of valuable NFTs, including a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT valued at $65,913 and a portfolio of NFTs worth a staggering $700,000 from various blue chip collections.
Gutter Cat Gang co-founder @gutterdan_ provided an update, stating that they are working with Twitter to regain access to the compromised accounts.
They expressed deep sympathy for those affected by the attack and assured the community that they are taking the matter seriously, cooperating with law enforcement to investigate the hack and security breach.
