Shiba Inu (SHIB) has announced a strategic alliance with domain name startup D3 Global to secure its top-level domain (TLD) “.shib.”
This move aims to improve the user experience in the Web3 landscape by giving Shiba Inu a distinct and easily identifiable digital address.
The acquisition of the “.shib” TLD is analogous to organizations having unique endings such as “.com” or “.org” in their web addresses.
A unique web address is analogous to having a recognizable street name in a city in the vast internet landscape, simplifying interactions within the digital world.
Under the partnership, D3 Global will play a crucial role in assisting Shiba Inu throughout the application process for the “.shib” TLD through the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
ICANN, a nonprofit organization, manages the central repository for IP addresses, coordinates the supply of IP addresses, and oversees the domain name system and root servers.
While the application process for a TLD is not immediate, with a timeline spanning over a year, Shiba Inu‘s initiative positions it favorably for the anticipated next round of TLD applications. This round is expected to open as early as May 2025 or as late as Q2 2026.
Shiba Inu’s collaboration with D3 Global also positions the company as an early adopter in the Web3 industry, integrating interoperable domains to improve the accessibility and functionality of its digital assets.
Shayan Rostam, co-founder of D3, emphasized the significance of the collaboration, saying, “By collaborating with Shib, we can introduce unique, memorable, and affordable products.
SHIB domain names to users, which will streamline their digital identities on the internet’s root layer with Web3 utility.”
Lead developer of Shiba Inu, Shytoshi Kusama, emphasized the partnership’s broader impact, stating, “Our partnership with D3 allows us to scale outside of the existing ShibArmy and give over 5 billion Internet users direct access to the SHIB ecosystem.”
The ShibArmy community will transition from impersonal wallet addresses to unique “.shib” domains, aligning with the vision of creating strong, interoperable digital identities within the global Domain Name System.
This move is expected to streamline digital identities within the decentralized Shiba Inu ecosystem, driving long-term revenue generation and enhancing the overall user experience.
D3’s patent-pending platform aims to bridge traditional Internet infrastructure with Web3 ecosystems, delivering enhanced utility, security, and universal access for what they term “real Web3 domains.”
