Siqi Chen’s journey shows how meme coins can create positive social change. After his four-year-old daughter, Mira, was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor called craniopharyngioma in September 2024, Siqi went through a tough time.

While his daughter had surgery and started to recover, Siqi decided to focus on something bigger—raising money for children’s brain tumor research instead of looking for help for his family.

A user named Waddles made a meme coin called MIRA on the Solana blockchain to help Siqi’s initiative, giving half of its supply to him. Siqi will donate all the money from MIRA to research, selling 1% of his holdings each day and keeping the community updated. Supporters connected with this transparency and purpose, causing MIRA’s value to rise unexpectedly, surpassing $14 million.

MIRA’s market cap rose to over $80 million as the campaign picked up speed, and trading volumes went over $100 million. Siqi highlighted that all the money raised would go straight to research, as he did not take any profits for himself. Even with challenges like fake tokens using his family’s image, Siqi stayed focused on his mission.

This interesting story matches what Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin thinks: meme coins can help society in a real way.
