Do Kwon, the co-founder of Terraform Labs, has been extradited from Montenegro to the United States, concluding a protracted legal battle.
Kwon was apprehended in March 2023 for attempting to travel with a counterfeit passport and subsequently fought extradition, seeking to return to South Korea instead. However, Montenegrin authorities denied his appeals, leading to his transfer to US officials at Podgorica International Airport on December 31.
Kwon faces serious charges linked to the catastrophic collapse of the TerraLUNA ecosystem in 2022, which resulted in a staggering loss of approximately $40 billion in market value.
The downfall was triggered by the de-pegging of TerraUSD, a stablecoin intended to maintain parity with the US dollar, which led to widespread financial devastation for investors and heightened regulatory scrutiny of the cryptocurrency market.
Following the collapse, South Korean authorities issued a warrant for Kwon on charges including fraud and tax evasion, while investors accused him of running a Ponzi scheme.
Kwon’s case has drawn significant attention, highlighting the vulnerabilities and regulatory challenges within the cryptocurrency sector. His extradition to the US marks a pivotal moment in the quest for industry accountability, as he is expected to face trial for various fraud-related charges.
