The Open Metaverse Alliance (OMA3) has officially launched today, with memberships available in two tiers: sponsor and creator.
It was first announced in July with the goal of establishing standards between metaverse platforms, and it is now in the process of forming working groups to investigate issues such as web3 legal issues.
The majority of associated members had ties to Hong Kong-based game software and venture capital firm Animoca Brands when it was first announced.
Animoca Brands, The Sandbox (one of its subsidiaries), and several brands in which the company has invested include Alien Worlds, Dapper Labs, Splinterlands, Star Atlas, and Upland.
It also includes Decentraland, with whom Animoca Brands has worked on Cryptovoxels, Meta Metaverse, Space, Superworld, and Wivity projects. Yuga Labs, the creator of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, and Unstoppable Domains, a provider of web3 domains, have also joined.
In addition, the group has reportedly been in the works since 2021 and will be governed by a decentralized autonomous organization.
There has been no official word on whether it plans to formally join the large tech-heavy Metaverse Standards Forum, which is backed by the Khronos Group.
