Bob Lee, the former chief technology officer of Square and creator of Cash App, tragically passed away following a stabbing incident in San Francisco in the early hours of Tuesday, April 4, 2023.

The news of his death was shared by Bill Barhydt, CEO of Abra, who tweeted about it on April 5. Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter and Square, also confirmed the news on the decentralized social media platform Nostr, expressing his heartbreak.

The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) received a report of a stabbing at around 2:35 am local time on April 4. Upon arrival, officers found a 43-year-old male victim with apparent stab wounds.

Despite receiving medical attention, the victim, later identified as Bob Lee, died due to his injuries. The SFPD is investigating the case as a homicide and is urging anyone with information to come forward.

Bob Lee was a prominent figure in the tech industry and gained recognition for his work as the first chief technology officer of Square (later renamed Block) and the creator of Cash App, a popular mobile payment service.

He was also the chief product officer of MobileCoin, a privacy-oriented cryptocurrency. Lee was a strong advocate of cryptocurrencies and believed they had the potential to benefit the unbanked population worldwide.

Former UFC fighter Jake Shields, who was a friend of Lee’s, expressed his shock and grief on Twitter, hoping that his death would raise awareness of the issues faced by the city. With Lee’s passing, the tech industry has lost an influential figure who contributed significantly to the development of innovative payment solutions.
