The Aptos unlock lands on August 12. The token count is not in dispute. It is 11.31 million APT.
Everything else is.
Depending on which data source you open, that unlock is 0.54%, 0.94%, 1.34%, or 2.20% of supply. Its dollar value is $6.47 million, $6.68 million, $10.34 million, or $52.1 million.
Three of those four percentages are arithmetically correct. That is the actual story.
The Same Unlock, Four Denominators
The percentages differ because the sources are dividing by different things and calling all of them supply.
Divide 11.31 million by Aptos’s 2.1 billion maximum supply, and you get 0.54%. Divide by the total supply of roughly 1.21 billion, and you get 0.94%. Divide by the circulating supply near 845 million, and you get 1.34%.
None of those is wrong. They answer different questions, and only one of them tells you about immediate sell pressure.
The number that matters for price is the unlock as a share of tokens already trading. That is the 1.34% figure. The others describe long-run dilution, which is a slower and different concern.
| Denominator used | Approximate figure | What it measures |
| Max supply, 2.1 billion | 0.54% | Very long-run dilution |
| Total supply, about 1.21 billion | 0.94% | Dilution against minted supply |
| Circulating supply, about 845 million | 1.34% | Near-term float expansion |
| Circulating supply, August 2025 | 2.20% | A figure from a year ago |
The Fourth Number Is From Last Year
The 2.20% figure, paired with a $52.1 million value, is circulating on aggregator feeds right now. It looks current. It is not.
It comes from a market data note published on August 10, 2025, describing an APT unlock on August 12 of that year. The date pattern matches because Aptos unlocks on the 12th of every month.
The tell is the valuation. A $52.1 million value for 11.31 million tokens implies a price around $4.60. APT trades near $0.59 today.
A year-old story about a monthly recurring event is almost indistinguishable from a current one if you only read the headline. This is a specific failure mode worth knowing about.
The Trackers Contradict Themselves Too
The disagreement is not only between sources. Several are internally inconsistent on their own pages.
One major tracker lists Aptos total supply at roughly 1.207 billion, circulating supply at 638.9 million, and locked supply at 1.438 billion. Those three figures cannot all be true at once.
The same site states that its fully diluted valuation assumes the maximum 2.1 billion tokens, then publishes an FDV figure that only works if you use total supply instead. The label and the arithmetic disagree.
Another exchange page describes market cap as price multiplied by total supply. That is not what market cap means, though the number it actually prints uses circulating supply.
A third still describes Aptos as having a total supply of 1 billion with 130 million circulating, which was accurate around launch in 2022.
Even the Price Does Not Match
Across sources checked on August 11, APT quoted at $0.58, $0.579, $0.587, $0.598, $0.612 and $0.621. One exchange page showed $1.589, on a page last updated in January.
Some of that spread is normal. Different venues, different volume weightings, different refresh intervals.
The stale outlier is not normal, and it sits on the same kind of page as the live ones with no visible warning.
Market cap readings ranged from about $490 million to $522 million on the same day, which follows from the price spread plus differing circulating supply assumptions.
What Is Actually Verifiable
Aptos unlocks monthly on the 12th. The August tranche is 11.31 million APT, distributed across multiple allocation categories rather than a single recipient.
The allocation split at genesis was roughly 51% community and ecosystem, 19% core contributors, 16.5% foundation and 13.5% investors.
Aptos uses a mix of cliff and linear release depending on category, with the schedule extending well beyond this decade.
APT trades around 97% below its January 2023 peak and sits close to its all-time low, which was set in recent weeks.
September brings another tranche of similar size, after which the monthly amount steps down materially.
Why 1.34% Is Not Necessarily a Problem
A monthly unlock of a little over 1% of float is meaningful but not extraordinary. Markets absorb this size regularly when demand is present.
The recipients matter more than the total. Ecosystem and foundation allocations may be deployed into grants, liquidity or staking rather than sold. Investor tranches behave differently.
Predictability also helps. This is a recurring monthly event on a known date, not a surprise cliff, so it is already visible to anyone positioning around it.
The risk is not the unlock in isolation. It is a steady monthly float expansion meeting thin demand, and the same reporting problem showed up in our coverage of Pi Network’s protocol deadline, where two widely quoted supply-release figures differed by hundreds of millions of tokens.
The Transferable Lesson
Before repeating any unlock statistic, check the denominator. A percentage of supply is meaningless until you know which supply.
Then check the date. Monthly unlock events generate near-identical coverage every cycle, and old articles resurface easily.
Then sanity check the dollar value against the current price. If the implied price is wrong, the whole figure is stale.
Aptos itself has been shipping through the noise, having recently passed 500,000 new accounts on the Expo 2025 digital wallet and expanded stablecoin transfers into Latin America with Bitso.
Supply schedules are one of the few things in this market that are genuinely knowable in advance. It is worth reading them correctly.
